Gresser / who contributed a great / deal to this effort. / With my most sincere / thanks. / Eugene Connett." These investigations included a collaborative effort with the distinguished Manhattan ophthamologist, Edward Bellamy Gresser. Their studies remain the most sophisticated evluation of the trout's eye. The work was performed in the Hackettstown trout hatchery on the little Musconetcong in northern New Jersey and at New York University" (p. 75). Illustrated by Ralph L. Boyer & Milton C. Edition of 15. Edition of 15. Signed lower right by the artist in pencil "Eugene V. Connett" with his presentation inscription in pencil at lower left, "Only 15 proofs were pulled from this plate, this is No. 7 for Samuel Milbank". 13 x 12 inches (Image 205 x 155 mm to plate mark). Superb original etching by sportsman and Derrydale Press publisher Eugene V. Connett 3rd, whose few artworks give evidence of his keen eye and innate talent. This etching - one of only two he ever did, by all accounts - is an attractive head of an American Woodcock (undated, 1920s?), a subject he knew well, and its execution is at the highest level (note the subtleties of the head and eye). Connett knew the bird as artist, author, and sportsman: he wrote on woodcock shooting and edited the Derrydale volume on Upland Game Bird Shooting in America (1930). This print is a presentation to Samuel Milbank, investment banker and a long-time trustee of Barnard College. Provenance: Samuel Milbank Fine. Matted, framed and glazed in bird?s eye maple Signed lower right by the artist in pencil ?Eugene V. Connett? with his presentation inscription in pencil at lower left, ?Only 15 proofs were pulled from this plate, this is No. 7 for Samuel Milbank? 13 x 12 inches (Image 205 x 155 mm to plate mark). Signed.
