El 26 de diciembre de 1885 renunció al cargo.En las Elecciones de 1896 fue elegido diputado por el distrito de Salas de los Infantes en la circunscripción de Burgos obteniendo 3 941 votos de un total de 7 124 emitidosen un censo electoral de 10 342 electores.Para ocupar la vacante producida por el fallecimiento de José Figueroa Torres, elegido en las Elecciones de 1901 se celebra una votación parcial el 2 de febrero de 1902, obteniendo el acta de diputado independiente por la Circunscripción de Jaén, distrito 317, Baeza, con 6 826 votos de un total de 11 053 emitidos, en un censo electoral de 16 974 electores.En las Elecciones Generales de 30 de abril de 1903 en España resulta elegido diputado independiente por la Circunscripción de Jaén, distrito 317, Baeza, obteniendo 10 248 votos de un total de 12 788 emitidos en un censo electoral de 17 025 electores. El año 1878 es nombrado Presidente del Congreso. Todo ello sin apartarse lo más mínimo de su carrera como literato.
