First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Undated Facsimile Reprint (possibly a pirate) of the original 1933 edition. Frontispiece, xi, 388 pp; 8 illus. Original cloth ('Cambridge' stamped at heel; if it's a pirate it's very well done). Near Fine, without dust jacket. I can find no other dates in this copy -- unpredecented in my experience with any Cambridge book that's a reprint, though I can think of a few undated First Editions (e.g., William S. Gosset, a.k.a Student, Collected Papers, 1942; only the 1947 reprint contains a date). This copy made me think of the well-known pirated editions of Joseph Needham's Science and Civilization in China, but those have a shoddier appearance. Also, it is easier to understand their cheap reissue in China -- and that of certain advanced physics and mathematics texts -- than it would be the book on Herschel, so I do not think that's where this copy originated. 'The other basic source [in addition to Herschel's Scientific Papers] for the historian is Constance A. Lubbock, The Herschel Chronicle (Cambridge, 1933), which includes many letters and private papers' (Michael A. Hoskin in D. S. B. VI: 336).
