Aperto al dibattito scientifico e filosofico, che lo vede tra i primi divulgatori di Newton, di Leibniz e di Wolff, e insieme agli interessi letterari ed estetici che lo conducono a dialogare direttamente con i testi più rilevanti della cultura europea attraverso un'intensa attività di traduttore, Conti intrattiene relazioni significative con i contemporanei, ma costituisce anche un punto di riferimento per gli autori successivi. Non a caso il suo rapporto con la modernità, senza frontiere geografiche o di disciplina, avrà un'influenza decisiva nella seconda metà del Settecento, quando scrittori come Pindemonte o Foscolo saranno indotti a confrontarsi non solo con le sue versioni poetiche, ma anche con quella teoria universale del mito che in accordo con la Scienza nuova vichiana (di cui Conti fu uno dei primi attenti lettori) attribuisce ai "fantasmi poetici" una verità conoscitiva.
