It opens with the author's ratification of the decisions and outlining the process and structure of the election of the Roman Emperor. The author then clarifies each Prince-Elector's responsibilities at the election. The text continues by expounding on how each Prince-Elector should behave and the order in which they should behave. Later chapters provide the rule of law regarding feudal obligations and rights, jurisdiction of courts, conduct within the Imperial Court, the elevation of cities to Principalities, and the conduct of trials and appeals. The body of the text concludes with a reiteration of the electoral process and the penalties for those who transgress the law. The book provides insight into the Holy Roman Empire and the role of the Prince-Electors during the fourteenth century and would be of great value to those interested in the history of the period. This book offers a deep dive into emblems or imprese, a form of heraldic iconography prevalent during the Renaissance and early modern era, particularly in Italy. Emblems, which combined images with brief accompanying mottos, were popular among noble families and scholars as a means of expressing their values, aspirations, and intellectual pursuits. The author delves into the history of emblems, tracing their origins in antiquity and their evolution into a sophisticated and complex form of visual communication. The book explores the various elements of an emblem, including its motto, figure, and symbolism, and examines how these elements worked together to convey meaning. The author also discusses the diverse uses of emblems in different social and cultural contexts. Emblems were employed for a wide range of purposes, from personal identification and commemoration to political propaganda and religious devotion. The book provides numerous examples of emblems from various periods and cultures, shedding light on their rich and multifaceted nature. Ultimately, this book is not just a study of emblems but also a meditation on the power of images and words to communicate complex ideas and emotions. It reveals the enduring fascination with emblems as a unique form of artistic expression that continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and artists alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book delves into the fascinating history and origins of human creativity, specifically focusing on the development and significance of emblems and other visual symbols known as "imprese". The author argues that these emblems are not simply decorative devices but rather profound expressions of human thought and emotion. The book traces the evolution of imprese from their ancient roots in religious rituals and heraldry to their widespread use during the Renaissance and beyond. Along the way, the author explores the rich symbolism and iconography associated with these emblems, examining how they reflect the social, political, and cultural values of the time periods in which they were created. Thematic depth and ideas: The book highlights the multifaceted nature of imprese, demonstrating their function as a form of non-verbal communication, a tool for expressing personal and collective identities, and a means of conveying abstract ideas through visual imagery. The author also discusses the role of imprese in the development of semiotics and the broader history of visual culture. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of art, symbolism, or the evolution of human creativity. Through its exploration of imprese, it sheds light on the profound and enduring ways in which visual symbols have shaped our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. This book chronicles the political and military events of the early 16th century in northern Italy, a period of time marked by complex alliances, battles, and sieges. The author offers a unique perspective on the life of Cesare d'Avalo, Marchese di Pescara, a renowned military commander who played a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the Italian Wars. Through detailed accounts of battles, diplomatic negotiations, and personal letters, the book provides insights into the strategies, motivations, and everyday realities of warfare during this turbulent period. The author also examines the broader political context, including the involvement of major European powers such as France and Spain, and the impact of the Protestant Reformation on the region. Kimball Brooker (Bibliotheca Brookeriana, VIII, lot 95).Original edition of this lavishly printed emblem book divided into two parts. The first part (ll. 1-43), after briefly discussing medals and hieroglyphics, deals with devices from a theoretical point of view by raising specific questions. The author, who demonstrates to be well aware of his predecessors' writings on the subject (citing, among others, Paradin, Giovio, Domenichi, Ruscelli, Ammirato, and Arnigio), distinguishes between crests, coat-of-arms, hieroglyphics, emblems, and devices, seeking to define how the latter differ from the former: the device, which in his opinion is ?componimento di figura e di motto rappresentando vertuoso e magnanimo disegno? (?a composition of figure and motto representing a virtuous and magnanimous design'), is only suitable for virtuous characters and not for ?li tinti d'infamia et i professori dell'arti meccaniche, eccettuati gl'ingegneri che stanno a' servigi de' principi, i pittori eccellenti e gli statuarii famosi? (?those tainted with infamy and those practicing mechanical arts, except for engineers who are in the service of princes, excellent painters, and famous sculptors'). The second part, on the other hand, is a veritable tribute to the members of the Accademia degli Affidati, whose devices are extensively commented on and enriched with numerous biographical details. The devices include that of Contile himself (l. 83), in which he provides valuable information about his life, and that of San Carlo Borromeo (l. 86).Towards the end of April 1574, the printing of Contile's Ragionamento was finally completed, and on August 23, he sent a copy of the newly printed book to the Duke of Parma, informing him that the edition had been ready for four months and, complaining about the quality of the printing, he was hoping for a second edition, which, however, never appeared. The publication had also been delayed by discussions arose among the members of the Accademia degli Affidati regarding its authorship, with some wanting the Ragionamento to be printed in the name of the Accademia, and others wanting it to be published solely under the name of its compiler; the latter party prevailed. Contile's treatise is considered the most accomplished, and certainly the most useful for the history of the genre. Furthermore, the second pa. Book.

A few spots, a few pages browned, overall a very good copy in seventeenth century Italian vellum richly gilt.First edition of one of the most uncommon and beautiful emblem book printed in Renaissance Italy. The work, dedicated to Philip II King of Spain, starts with a very useful general discussion of the imprese and then continues with a detailed discussion of the devices of the members of the Accademia degli Affidati in Pavia. ?Contile's Ragionamento, composed for the Accademia degli Affidati (Pavia), was published in 1574. This work is valuable both for its former section, theoretical, and for the latter, illustrated and devoted to the interpretation of a series of imprese belonging to noblemen and members of the accademie. It offers a magnificent exemplification of the role that the Italian accademie, whose members were used to conceive and exhibit imprese as distinctive marks, played in the reflection on the imprese, in their circulation outside the courtesan milieu, in keeping alive the fashion of that witty symbolic form.? (University of Glasgow. The study of italian emblems. 2006) The book is illustrated with full page engraved device of Philip II of Spain showing in the center the planisphere, engraved device of the Accademia degli Affidati and one hundred and fourteen engraved devices of the members of the Accademia. The devices, designed with elaborate borders on the copperplate, include the motto and the academic pseudonym of the owner. Among these devices we should mention Contile's own device and those of Saint Charles Borromeo and Emanuele Filiberto Duke of Savoy.Luca Contile (Cetona, 1505 ? Pavia, 1574) was a poet, playwright and a diplomat. After studying in Siena and Bologna he started working for princes and cardinals; he first was at service of Cardinal Agostino Trivulzio in Rome from 1527 to 1542 where he attended the Accademia della Virtù and met Annibal Caro and Francesco Molza, members of the same academy. Later he was at the service of Alfonso d'Avalos Marquis of Vasto and in 1548 he worked for Ferrante Gonzaga, Governor of Milan, and for the Archbishop of Trento, Cristoforo Madruzzo. After leaving Trento he went to Venice where he entered the Accademia Veneziana and then, in 1560, he returned at the service of Marquis d'Avalos in Milan. Thanks to the recommendation of the Marquis of Pescara he was appointed by the Spanish as commissioner in Pavia, where he remained until his death, dedicating himself to historical studies and actively participating in the Accademia degli Affidati.
