[CONTRACEPTION] So Close To Nature. [Chicago]: Mead Johnson & Company, 1966. Measures approximately 4.5" x 6.5" inches, original illustrated wrappers. 9 pages. Original 2 staples at spine. Instruction manual for taking Oracon, the first sequential oral contraceptive. Tellingly, the illustrations on the wrapper depict a bride in virginal white, and her again, still in pure white, holding an infant. Oral contraception was very controversial-- it had been legalized only the year before, in 1965-- and oral contraception advocates and inventors emphasized that birth control would help a woman become pregnant when she wanted to, not avoid pregnancy altogether. This manual includes the schedule for taking the pull, a menstrual record chard, what side effects to expect ("the vast majority of women never experience these annoying side affects. The chances are excellent that you will not either"), and repeated emphasis that the pill only follows :your natural feminine pattern." Toning, very occasional smudging and soiling. In good condition and scarce.
[Reproductive Health] [Women's Medicine] Students' Society of McGill University. "Birth Control Handbook." Montreal, 1970. Staplebound, with illustrated wrappers. 47 pages, 10" x 7." Front bears black-and-white photograph of a mother and her newborn. The Birth Control Handbook was published by McGill University as a response to an increase of backstreeet abortions and lack of contraceptive access. Millions of copies were distributed for free at university campus all over Canada and the United States. The booklet contains unbiased, straightforward information about the reproductive system, varieties of contraception, abortions, and sexually transmitted infections. It is profusely illustrated with photographs, medical diagrams, anatomical drawings, and more. Once controversial, this handbook is now considered an important piece of literature in the women's liberation movement. Consistent toning throughout, some foxing present on front wrapper. Very good condition.
