Condition: Very good. - Sepia-toned magazine portrait, 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide, mounted on a piece of cream-colored card, approximately 4-3/4 inches high by 3 inches wide. Signed in black ink on the mount below the portrait: "R. E. Coontz / Admiral, US Navy / Retired / 1930." The mount is lightly soiled. Very good. The head-and-shoulders portrait shows the elderly admiral swimming in a slightly choppy sea.Robert Edward Coontz [1864-1935] was an admiral in the United States Navy. During the Spanish-American War Coontz and his ship the Charleston siezed control of Guam, then joined Admiral George Dewey's forces in the Philippines. He was Governor of Guam in 1912-13. In 1919 he was appointed Chief of Naval Operations. While wrestling with financial problems, new technologies, pressure from Congress and the naval fallout from the Teapot Dome scandal, Coontz established a unified United States Fleet and strengthened the CNO's position within the Navy Department.

Coontz (1864-1935) held a 47-year naval career, with notable assignments including Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy from 1910-1911, Governor of Guam from 1912-1913, and Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1919-1923. In his time as CNO, Coontz established a United States Fleet, later becoming Commander in Chief of this fleet in 1923. In 1925, the United States Fleet, similar to the Great White Fleet Coontz earlier sailed with (which circumnavigated the world from 1907-1909), embarked on a trans-Pacific visit to Australia, highlighting the strength of the Navy and improving international relations. Major Sophie Pearce Casey was the Supervisor of Instruction at the First National Service School during World War I. The First National Service School was organized under the Women's Section of the Navy League. Signed.
