Wraps. First edition. viii, 65 p. illus. 28 cm. Smithsonian studies in history and technology; no. 7. Smithsonian studies in history and technology, no. 7. Includes Illustrations. Bibliography: p. 63-65. The Copp Family Textiles SMITHSONIAN STUDIES IN HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY. AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION of household textiles, costume items, furniture and related family pieces used by the Copp family of Stonington, Connecticut, from 1750 to 1850, were presented to the United States National Museum in the 1890s by John Brenton Copp. Although it is not uncommon for families to save some treasured items from their beloved ancestors, it is far less common to save so much of the more utilitarian types of fabrics-ticking by the bolt, handwoven sheets by the dozens, yards and yards of fringes-items that many other, more frugal, New Englanders might have continued to use throughout the nineteenth century. In addition to the general background information, this catalog includes considerable technical information about each textile. These included thirty sheets, twenty-four of which were marked with embroidered initials. Many of the earliest books on weaving, textiles and needlework, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Very good. 1971 edition, light shelfwear and mild soiling to the cover.

Hardcover without dust jacket. Ex-Library book with appropriate stamps, stickers and markings. Black covers with gold lettering and design. Wear noted to corners, edges and head and tail of spine. Pages browning with age but clean and very readable with many illustrations. Smithsonian Institution United States National Museum Bulletin 254, Washington, DC 1968. It had no instrument panel with push-button controls. It was not operated electronically or jet-propelled. But to many 19th century people the sewing machine was probably as awe-inspiring as a space capsule is to their 20th-century descendants. It was expensive, but, considering the work it could do and the time it could save, the cost was more than justified. The sewing machine became the first widely advertised consumer appliance, pioneered installment buying and patent pooling, and revolutionized the ready-made clothing industry. It also weathered the protests of those who feared the new machine was a threat to their livelihood. Here is it's story.
