Add to basketCondition: Near Fine. A letter from Thomas J. Hoskinson of the 58th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Company E, to Major Charles Winn of Company G. Hoskinson was in a hospital in Erie recuperating from an unspecified but serious illness, and writes to Winn primarily because he is "endeavouring to get out of the service and am usi…ng all the influence of my friends towards that object." Hoskinson seemed to have wanted out partly due to the illness, but more importantly because of his deep ideological disagreements with Republicans and abolitionists. He begins his complaint: "Like you I am tired of the War and the service and disgusted with this abolition administration. Didnt it make your blood boil, when Lincoln laid down his Ultimatum, that no proposition for peace would be entertained, that did not contain the abandonment of Slavery? What right had he to say that? Was there ever a greater usurpation of power? The fact is, this country is one vast military despotism." Hoskinson comments that "while Republican officers would be allowed full swing to say and do as they pleased, the Democratic officer that would dare lift his voice to electioneer against Lincoln, would be summarily dismissed." He then turns his ire more directly towards advocates of abolition, criticizing them for what he perceives as their unwillingness to actually fight for their cause and their inability to convince anyone else to do so: "Have you noticed how nobly and patriotically Erie County + City responded to the call for 100 lay men. Erie Co can always be relied on to give a majority of from three to four thousand for 'a vigorous prosecution of the war' and 'the hanging of domestic traitors' and the city a majority of three hundred. Well after the drumming and making abolition speeches for a week Six (6) men went from the whole county. Our abolition friends don't mean to fight and when you hear them speak of spending the last dollar and losing the last man, it is his copperheadneighbors dollar he speaks of and he himself intends to be the last man." Hoskinson worried that Lincoln's re-election was a certainty "Unless there is a great reaction before fall-and God grant it", and hoped that the Democratic party would nominate James Guthrie over George McClelland, correctly predicting that "McClellan would be badly defeated" by Lincoln. Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: Excellent. A forceful anti-emancipation letter sent from western Illinois during the second year of the Civil War. Written nine months after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect and only weeks after the Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, the letter captures the views of a Northern Democrat who supported… the war for preservation of the Union but regarded both emancipation and the expansion of executive power under Lincoln as unconstitutional departures from the principles of the Founding generation. After briefly discussing his health and employment as a bookkeeper at a steam mill, Rausern turns to politics, contrasting Illinois with Massachusetts and launching into a lengthy denunciation of abolitionists, whom he accuses of urging others into military service while themselves avoiding personal sacrifice: "We are not going to have a draft in Illinois this time, having an excess of 8,151 yet credited to us on the next if there should be another call. That is not a bad contrast for us by the side of the Abolition State of Massachusetts that has always howled, yet done but little fight. Abolition always did mean 40 miles from any fight. Look at the Cowardly Scoundrel of the New York Independent. Wanted a draft, and all men hung & quartered that was not in favor of said draft, 'But', what did he do, when drafted. Skulked and did not want to pay or fight. That is the way with Wendell Phillips, Owen Lovejoy, Wm. Lloyd Garrison & all of the ranting Abolitionists. When it comes to the test they want someone else to do the fighting." The letter articulates a position common among Northern War Democrats during 1863: support for military action against secession coupled with opposition to emancipation. Rausern writes: "I was in for the war and the Govt. until said Govt. made the Abolition Proclamation, then I said fight all of you Negro loving ones, I am not of that class. Some may say that it was a military necessity. That is all nonsense and no one that is well informed will say so. Previous to that the North was united, the South divided. Now vice versa." He continues with an extended constitutional critique of Lincoln's wartime policies, particularly the suspension of habeas corpus, arguing that "the President being the Executive, not the Legislative part of our Govt., has no right to do it", and that Congress could not delegate that power: "The old Fool thinks that it is a political necessity, not a military one. I am for the Constitution and the Govt. as it was left to us by our Revolutionary fathers and for it if needs be will sacrifice life & fortune for its defence & support." Rausern concludes by attacking the abolitionist leader Wendell Phillips, repeating contemporary accusations that Phillips had spent years seeking to undermine the Constitution and the Union itself: "But it looks gloomy when such men as Wendell Phillips is cited to as models of Patriots, that makes his boast that he has laboured 19 years to break up this Govt. and that the Constitution is a compact of death and in league with Devils. This is not idle talk, it is language that he used in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, and that Negro visaged Vice Pres't Hamlin cheered him when he said it. He repeated the same language in Cincinnati, Ohio and got rotten egged for his treasonable statements. The West is not of that kind, notwithstanding the cry of Copper-head of Abolition New England. We are for whipping Southern traitors and Northern Abolitionists, for they are alike guilty of treason." Overall the letter expresses Midwestern Democratic opposition to emancipation and wartime executive power, written from the home front as the political consensus that had initially sustained the Union war effort was fracturing. The older man angrily replies, "I despise you more than I hate the rebel who sent his bullet through my dead son's heart! You miserable creature! Do you expect me to dishonor my poor boy's memory, and vote for men who charges American soldiers, fighting for their country, with being hirelings and murderers?" "The image criticizes a Northern political faction active 1861-64 known as the Copperheads, whose members favored the Union but opposed Lincoln and the Civil War. The print responds to McClellan's nomination as Democratic candidate for president, and attempts to reconcile his military service with the party's peace platform. Currier & Ives name does not appear on the print, but scholars of Civil War era satires linked it to the firm" [online site, Metropolitan Museum of Art]. The Copperhead at the center is Horatio Seymour, Governor of New York, a leading opponent of the Lincoln administration and a sympathizer with the New York City Draft Rioters. Franklin Pierce remained politically active upon his return to New Hampshire following his presidency, advocating for the Democratic cause and generally opposing the Civil War and Lincoln's policies. This scarce pro-Union anti-slavery broadside, printed for the 1863 New Hampshire elections which happened March 12,… takes aim at Pierce and his fellow Democrats, repeating the unfounded claim first made in 1862 by William Seward that Pierce belonged to the secret Knights of the Golden Circle, the secret society formed with the goal of forming a new territory out of the CSA, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. There was never evidence that Pierce had any involvement in the KGC, though the society had members in southern parts of some Union states such as Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri. The broadside, printed for the March 12 elections, quotes heavily from Pierce as well as the other Democrat candidates and party officials who were either running for office in New Hampshire or involved in politics, a group which included Ira Eastman, John Goerge, Josiah Minot, Thomas Treadwell, Daniel Marcy, William Burns and George Stevens. The broadside includes an engraving of coiled snakes, each with these politicians named, and the caption "et id omne genus." Eastman, the Democratic candidate for governor, won the popular vote but lacked the constitutional majority necessary for election. Marcy was successful in his bid for the First District. "Men of New Hampshire!," the broadside asks: "Will you Vote the Ticket Made up by Such Men?," with the final line imploring to "Please paste up in a Conspicuous Place." Overall an uncommon survival from the 1863 elections. A very good copy with some light toning, small closed tear at upper magin, light foxing at upper margin, very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Quite scarce, with OCLC locating two copies only, at the Huntington Library and the New York Historical Society. Printed broadside, 16 ½ x 11 ½ inches, archivally mounted and matted.
