Excellent impression, large engraving, minor crease to top right corner, flattened, no affect, minor soiling to edges, overall still excellent, rare. Ceres holds sheath of grain and baring breasts as a symbol of motherhood. Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility. She is a goddess of the common people and responsible for motherly aspects of having children and marriage. She is an imported diety from the Greek goddess Demeter. Cornelius Cort (1533-15778), Dutch artist, in 1533 made his first series of prints for Hieronymus Cock, the famous Antwerp publisher. It appears that Cort was employed by Cock because he only began to sign his plates after they were not being published by him any longer. Because of his remarkable graphic style, Cort was especially popular as a reproduction etcher. More than 50 engravings by Cort after models by Frans Floris have been preserved. [see Ketterer Kunst biography]. Frans Floris (c1519-1570), Flemish painter and etcher, helped spread 16th-century Italian art styles and greatly influenced the Northern Renaissance, painted religious works and classical allegories. Ceres is numbered 3 of an 8 piece series titled Pastoral Nymphs and Goddesses by Hieronymus Cock published in 1564. Citations: BM: F, 1.296. New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) 104.1 for Frans Flors.
