Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. No other theological text polarized the early modern Catholic world as much as Cornelius Jansen's Augustinus. In it the erudite bishop not only reconstructed St. Augustine's teaching on grace and free will, but also threw down the gauntlet to the Council of Trent and the Society of Jesus. For Jansen the latter had marginalized the Church Father's doctrine on divine predestination by overemphasizing human free will. Published after his death in 1640, Jansen's work drew a large crowd of followers and inspired an Augustinian reform movement. Its papal condemnation unintentionally spread this theology, but stifled an impassionate, academic engagement with the Augustinus. This first-ever translation of some of its central chapters enables historians, philosophers and theologians to finally engage with the founding text of Jansenism. Seller: Librairie des Colporteurs - Manuscrit, Grézillac, France
ARNAULD D'ANDILLY (Robert). (Brunet, I, 488). ¶ Beautiful piece of Jansenism, placed on the Index, and from the library of Jules Croissandeau (1842-1895), Orleans historian. Robert Arnauld d'Andilly (1589-1674) was a prominent member of the Arnauld family, famous for his role in the Jansenist movement and his proximity to the Abbey of Port-Royal. A translator and prolific author, he put his pen at the service of major spiritual texts, including the "Christian Works" (9th edition, Paris, widow Jean Camusat and Pierre le Petit, 1645), important for their dissemination of Christian values and their connection with the Port-Royal school and Augustinianism. The offered volume also brings together Arnauld d'Andilly's French translation (with its own title page) of an equally rare and fundamental work by Cornelius Jansen (1585-1638), Bishop of Ypres, central figure of Jansenism and professor of Holy Scripture at the University of Louvain. His "Discourse on the Reformation of the Inner Man" (Paris, widow Camusat & Pierre le Petit, 1644) strives to define the true foundations of Christian virtues and promotes an intimate and profound conversion, granting a central place to the action of grace in the transformation of the believer's heart. Good general condition, inscriptions on the first title page, other defects are minor. (Brunet, I, 488).
