Johannes Condet (illustrator). Map. Engraving 24 x 19 1/4" Striking map of Egypt, southern Levant and part of Saudi Arabia showing ancient and modern names. Tightly rendered depiction of Jebel's or hill ranges in the Sinai. Many famous routes and roads included, as well as temples and ruins. Five insets show the mouth of the Nile throughout history as described by Herod, Strabo (geographer), Diodorus, Pliny and Ptolemy. A beautiful title cartouche with an obelisk, alligator and a reclining figure. Some mat burn and toning but otherwise in very good condition. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.

Map. Engraving. Image measures 8 1/2" x 12 3/8" This map of the Bay and City of Havana, Cuba, issued in the mid-18th century, focuses on the coastal geography and military fortifications of Havana, reflecting its crucial role in Spain's Caribbean defenses. Unlike more elaborate city plans, this map is notably restrained in its detail. It does not feature a street grid or harbor traffic, but instead emphasizes key strategic elements of the harbor. Four prominent fortifications "Velha Fort", "Moro Fort", "Water Casteel", and "Mesa de Maria F." are hand-colored in red, drawing attention to their importance in the defense of the bay. Two anchor symbols are marked in the bay, denoting safe anchorage points for ships. A decorative rococo-style title cartouche is featured on the left, with two indigenous figures depicted. Topography is depicted pictorially. Published in Amsterdam by Covens and Mortier, the map was based on a 1702 edition issued by Pierre Mortier during the War of Spanish Succession. The visual simplicity and military focus suggest the map was intended more for strategic or educational use than for ornamental purposes. In very good condition, with wide margins as issued. Minor wear to edges, and faint scattered foxing and overall toning. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens.
