Cest le premier traité français d'histopathologie de cette importance et il ne sera pas surpassé avant plusieurs décennies. Il fut traduit en anglais en 1880 et eut trois éditions (3ème édition en quatre volumes en 1901-1912). Les auteurs écrivent dans la préface : "Les moyens d'étude dont nous avons disposé pour la rédaction de ce manuel proviennent d'autopsies ou d'opérations faites dans les hôpitaux de Paris." ; ils précisent qu'ils n'appartiennent à aucune école. André Victor Cornil (1837-1908) fut médecin des hôpitaux et devint en 1882 professeur d'anatomie pathologique à la Faculté de médecine de Paris. Il s'intéressa très tôt à cette discipline, ayant effectué un stage chez le célèbre pathologiste allemand Virchow à la fin de son internat. Charcot a dit de lui: "Il a été mon maître en histologie". Louis Antoine Ranvier (1835-1922) fut professeur au Collège de France, obtenant en 1875 la chaire d'histologie nouvellement créée.
