Très bon état. Format 16,7…x 25,4 cm. "Etude sérieuse, judicieuse, puisée aux sources, à des sources authentiques et de première main. MM. de Bontin et Cornille étudient successivement les formations sédentaires et les levées de volontaires proprement dits, c'est-à-dire les milices, les gardes nationales, l'armée révolutionnaire, les volontaires de 1791 destinés aux armées, la levée en masse, les réquisitionnaires. De très curieuses annexes, des lettres de volontaires aussi remplies de sentiments patriotiques que de fautes d'orthographe complètent d'une façon très pittoresque ce volume d'un intérêt soutenu. En somme, il se passa dans l'Yonne ce que l'on put voir dans toutes les provinces de France. Si les administrations départementales rivalisèrent généralement de zèle pour satisfaire aux injonctions du gouvernement, si en 1791 l'exode des populations vers l'armée et la frontière fut nombreux et empreint d'un réel souffle patriotique, cet entrain fut éphémère et les désertions, les congés, les remplacements ramenèrent au foyer familial, en un temps trop court, nombre de ceux qui l'avaient quitté naguère. Il fallut des mesures draconiennes pour maintenir les volontaires au drapeau et encore n'y parvint-on pas toujours. Heureusement les débris des anciens corps permanents demeuraient là pour amalgamer ces novices et ce fut seulement après cet amalgame que nos armées parvinrent au point d'homogénéité et de résistance qui nous permit de lutter avec avantage contre l'Europe coalisée. Ce volume demeure une contribution excellente non seulement à l'histoire du département de l'Yonne, mais à l'histoire générale du pays et à celle des débuts militaires de la Révolution."
