Signed on recto by New York Secretary of State (and later Governor, Senatory, and Civil War General) John A. Dix, comptroller Azariah C. Flagg, and Surveyor General Wil…liam Campbell. Endorsed on verso to chamberlain P.V. Shankland, and signed by Corning. A check $50,000 drawn on the Mechanics and Farmers Bank, payable to Erastus Corning as Mayor of Albany, and endorsed by him on verso. Corning was an American industrialist whose speculations in land, manufacturing, and transportation made him one of the wealthiest men in the United States. His Albany Iron Works provided material for the Union army during the Civil War. The Erie Canal, which linked the Hudson River to Lake Erie, was the Interstate of its day, and the foundation of New York's economic expansion in the first half of the 19th century. The railroads rendered it obsolete, but in 1836 the city fathers of Albany, apparently ignoring that writing on the wall, raised funds to expand the canal from 40 feet wide to 70, and deepen it from 4 feet to 7, enabling it to handle much larger boats carrying much more cargo.

Southwick apologises for not repaying a loan from Corning, giving as a reason the lack of success of his book 'A Layman's Apology': 'I have not to this day, except paying the Printers out of the subscription, received one hundred dollars.' His lecture receipts… from 'the Western district' have also been disappointing, 'for I met with so much opposition in some quarters, that it nullified, as it were, my success in others; so that all I accomplished, was to keep my head above water, excepting, that amid much embarrassment, and many privations, I have at last brought to perfection, or rather completion, an entire system of Self Education, of the utmost importance to the rising generation'. He has been told by 'Messrs. Carey and Lee, of Philadelphia, that so soon as there shall be a favourable change in our monied concerns they will purchase the Copy Right of my Lectures on Self Education - The Harpers promise the same as to my Course of Bible Lectures'. In a postscript Southwick boasts of 'more string to my bow - my son succeeds in establishing my Family Newspaper - for on his means, and industry as a Printer, it entirely relies for its publication [.] You may judge of his merit, when I assure you that he saved out of his hard-earnings, as a Journeyman Printer three years, enough to enable him to purchase & pay for half the Printing-Office of Messrs. Skinner & Co:'.

He is pleased "to know that [Bullions has] good letters of introduction" as "they wi…ll no doubt bring [him] in contact with gentlemen that will be beneficial" to him and his son. He hopes that "[Edwin's] future life will prove that the time he has & will have in Europe will prove of much use to him." Signed, "Your af. friend / Erastus Corning." Autograph letter signed on 8 ¼' x 5 ¼" ivory paper. Has an accompanying transmittal envelope addressed to Rev. Alex Bullions, Care Mes. Baring Brothers & Co. London and marked in manuscript: "Steamer from Boston". Erastus Corning (1794-1872) was an American businessman and politician. He was involved in the iron industry, banking, and railroads. He was also a mayor of Albany, NY (1934-37) who served two terms as a U.S. congressman (1857-59, 1861-63). Rev. Alexander Bullions (1779-1857) was pastor of the Associate Congregation of Cambridge for 50 years and the author of Repentance: A Tract. Condition: Mailing fold lines, otherwise very good condition.
