Étienne Corot, envoi autographe signé à la comédienne Berthe Cerny, sur un feuillet volant provenant d'un exemplaire de son livre La Ville en sang / Autour de la Révolution Russe paru chez Fasquelle en 1913. Provenance : Fonds d'autographes de la comédienne Berthe Cerny (1868-1940) "A Mademoiselle Berthe Cerny / en souvenir de la première / branche de laurier cueillie par / François, ce 23 octobre 1915" François Johnston (1898-1936) est le second fils de Berthe Cerny. Il faisait ses armes au lycée Louis-le-Grand pour préparer l'Ecole des Mines lorsque la guerre vint l'arracher à ses études. Brillant officier, il rapporta la Croix de Guerre, entra à l'Ecole des Mines et fit une courte carrière en tant qu'ingénieur des Mines avant d'être emporté par la maladie en 1936, laissant sa mère dans un grand désespoir. Tous les envois autographes signés à Berthe Cerny ou Aristide Briand provenant du fonds de la comédienne ont malheureusement été détachés des livres. * ** Hélène-Lucie de Choudens, dite Berthe Cerny, a fait ses premières armes auprès de Gustave-Hippolyte Worms au Conservatoire dont elle sort en 1885 avec un premier prix de Comédie. Engagée à l'Odéon, puis au Vaudeville, puis sur d'autres scènes, elle fait pendant vingt ans une brillante carrière sur les boulevards et se fait remarquer dans les pièces de Paul Hervieu, Marcel Prévost, Georges de Porto-Riche. Elle entre à la Comédie-Française en 1906, demandée par Maurice Donnay dont elle crée Paraître. Elle s'impose dans le répertoire classique en interprétant Célimène, Suzanne, Alcmène, mais aussi dans La Parisienne de Becque et atteint l'apogée de son succès avec son interprétation d'Araminte des Fausses confidences de Marivaux. Dans la comédie moderne, elle incarne à merveille les héroïnes passionnées d'Henri Bataille (parmi lesquelles la baronne Irène dans Maman Colibri), de Paul Géraldy, François de Curel, etc. Elle se retire, en 1930, et est aussitôt nommée sociétaire honoraire. Elle a été la compagne de Raoul William Johnston, Aristide Briand et Paul Reynaud. Dédicacé par l'auteur.
