Signed "WB Edition #1 1/30" along with artist signature. Measures 12 x 8 1/2 x 6 inches. Sitting, though not attached, on a piece of petrified wood.Jesse Wallace Corsaut, 1929 -2016, was a native of Kansas but made his name in the Monterey peninsula as a sculptor and painter. He is most well known for his bronzes of John Wayne but is also the creator of many Cannery Row bronze sculptures including the Charles Ricketts Memorial, the Diver's Memorial, the Fisherman's Memorial and the Queen of Cannery Row. Corsaut, who was born in 1929 in Hutchinson, Kansas, was known for his sculpture of John Steinbeck that sits at the Steinbeck Library in Salinas as well as sculptures of Ed Ricketts and the fishermen on Fisherman?s Wharf. He was the youngest artist to be accepted as a portrait painter by the art institution Portraits Inc. at the age of 21. Coursaut came to California in 1956 after spending eight years studying under well-known artist Robert Brackman and others at the Art Students League of New York City. Mr. Corsaut chose the independent art school after receiving admission to Yale and a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute. In addition to the Cannery Row projects, he was also commissioned to create a life-size bronze of Polish pianist and composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski. In 1993, he created the Presidential Medallion for President Bill Clinton. He was awarded the Scopus Medal by Nancy Reagan in Washington, D.C., for his John Wayne and Native American sculptures. His daughter, Aneta, an actress, made he debut with Steve McQueen in The Blob.
