Stante o proprio a causa di questa imprescindibile dicotomia, la silloge è idealmente suddivisa in due parti: nella prima l'Autore si affida a una sottile vena ironica per esplorare i recessi nascosti dell'animo umano, nella seconda lascia che si imponga una soffusa dimensione onirica. L'esemplificazione di queste due anime si ritrova nella misterica figura di Adelmo Petrolo Portinari, di cui ognuno di noi può decifrare, alla luce della propria sensibilità, la chiave di lettura. Dodici storie che prendono l'avvio da un fatto quotidiano per rivelare, poco alla volta, l'esistenza di piani di coscienza diversi. Nella prima parte si fatica a non simpatizzare con mostri e vampiri molto umani, anche quando i mostri stanno nella nostra testa e sono quelli che, citando Stephen King, fanno più paura. Le umane debolezze e fobie inevitabilmente traghettano individui deboli verso la nemesi di se stessi, pizzicando corde da cui risuona la paura. Nella seconda, spicca una serie di figure irreali e fantasiose, di storie di oggetti e di antiche civiltà, che spesso rimandano a una figura chiave per l'Autore, quella del nonno, visto come una presenza intensa ma temporanea nella vita di un bambino, che deve concentrare in pochi anni tutto l'affetto di una lunga vita. I racconti di questa ultima parte toccano corde che restituiscono un suono struggente e lontano di amore e nostalgia.
