HENLEY was a medieval market town and river port that flourished during the long centuries when the river was the principal highway for bulk goods such as timber, wool, grain and malt. Improvements to the roads and increasing coach and waggon traffic, some bound for Wales and Holyhead, maintained Henley's prosperity up to the 1840s. Brunel brought the first serious slump in the town's fortunes by taking his Great Western Railway through Reading and Twyford, drawing away much of Henley's trade. Thus the newly-invented camera found mid19th-century Henley in decay and was able to record the ancient town before late Victorian revival brought `improvement' and redevelopment. The river that had fostered old Henley nursed the town back to health as a thriving leisure centre. Its annual regatta had been held since 1839, the oldest regatta in the world; but when Prince Albert became its patron in 1851 it became the most prestigious boating event in the world as the Henley Royal Regatta. Achieving international prominence in late Victorian times, it put Henley on the world map and encouraged the development of a town pleasant both to live in and to visit. The transformation from redundant port to riparian resort over the past century and a half is vividly revealed by the coauthors in a superb selection of well-captioned old photographs, giving great visual appeal to their very readable account of Henley's past. Size: Sm 4to. Signed by the Authors.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This inspiring new book weaves a web of stories focusing on people whose work in health professions education has touched the lives of others in very important ways. Each chapter is told from the viewpoint of an education innovator and is supplemented by short reflections from those individuals whose lives have been changed as a result of that work. With a focus on the process of innovation, the book organically explores various phases from conceptualization, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination. Educators' Stories of Creating Enduring Change generates a deeper understanding of an individual's capacity for creating enduring change. It is ideal for all medical professions educators. 'We wanted to inspire other educators to live their dreams by following in the footsteps of a group of leaders in health professional education. By helping the authors tell their stories, we wanted the readers to experience their deep commitment - actually, it was more like a deep conviction - to realizing their vision of ways to improve health professional education and the learning environments. We asked these education leaders to write 'their stories' and lace their professional journeys with stories from those whom they have influenced along the way. In the end, our goal was to have a collection of librettos that would inspire readers to say, 'I can do that!'' From the Preface.
