Alberto Cougnet (1850-1916), nizzardo, fu figura eclettica e poliedrica: medico, giornalista, appassionato di sport abile spadaccino e lottatore e cultore delle arti culinarie. Cfr. Bella legatura editoriale in piena tela chiara illustrata a colori con una scena di lotta tratta da una xilografia di Hokusay. Con 109 illustrazioni fotografiche ed incise di varie dimensioni nel testo. Esemplare in stato di conservazione molto buono. Prima ed unica edizione di questo interessante ed approfondito saggio sul mondo della lotta libera moderna detta anche "Ginnastica bellica o patriottica" nel quale l' A. include però anche molte delle arti marziali orientali conosciute "i popoli asiatici ebbero sempre, fin dalle più lontane epoche che confinano colle teogonie e coi poemi epici, una predilezione per la lotta". Da un punto di vista sociologico, anche se l' A. si riferisce a tali discipline come "maschi esercizi" , va evidenziato il fatto che il Cougnet nel 1912 si occupa anche delle lotte libere praticate dalle donne, rappresentandole anche in diversi combattimenti. Di grande interesse è anche la descrizione e spiegazione di lotte ormai sconosciute, come la Lotta Svizzera, con i pastori dell' Oberland ed il campione G. Wittwer, ed il Glima islandese con le sue molteplici varianti tecniche pratiche; nella parte quarta troviamo anche le dettagliate cronache dei combattimenti di Catch del 1911 tra i grandi campioni di lotta americana o "Catch-as-catch-can" dell' epoca quali: Gotch, Giovanni, Raicevich, John Lemn, Zbysco, il Dr. Roller, Hackenschmidt, Pilakoff, Alec Munroe, Buz, De Riaz, Armando Cherpillod. Il poliedrico Autore, buongustaio e gastronomo ma anche spadaccino provetto ed appassionato di sport "spirito colto e raffinato, buongustaio dotto e raffinato", aveva già pubblicato con l' editore Hoepli, oltre a celebri testi gastronomici come "L' Arte cucinaria in Italia", tre manuali sulla scienza d' armi e la scherma di spada, uno sul pugilato e la difesa personale ed uno sulla lotta greco-romana.
