First edition of these reflections on penal reform by a French philanthropist inspired by contemporary reports on the American penitentiary system by Beaumont & Tocqueville and Blouet & Demetz, all of whom had visited the United States. Chapter II contains observations on capital punishment throughout French history (II, pp32 - 68); other chapters deal with criminal legislation since the French Revolution (III), prisons in France (VI), solitary confinement (X & XII); the objections to the Pennsylvanian system intended to replace capital punishment (XIV) etc. The last section comprises extracts from the treatise by Demetz by Blouet regarding US institutions. The author (1797-1852) was a co-founder of Mettray, the famous agricultural penitentiary colony for delinquent youth which opened in 1839 to become a model open prison throughout the western world. The colony was laid out on the author's estate by the architect Blouet; Demetz was its first director. Some light foxing.

1 tableau dépliant « Justice de la Touraine ».Rare édition originale par l'un des fondateurs de la Colonie de Mettray."Louis-Herman de Brétignières de la Courteilles (1797-1852), Conseiller général d'Indre-et-Loire de 1830 à 1848, il est rapporteur de la commission chargée d'étudier le régime de la prison de Tours. Il publie, en 1838, un ouvrage intitulé Les Condamnés et les prisons ou la réforme morale, criminelle et pénitentiaire et il est poursuivi pour diffamation par le médecin de la prison de Tours, procès dont il sort acquitté par la Cour d'assises le 16 mars 1839.Il prévoit de créer un hospice près de son château du Petit-Bois et fait construire un bâtiment qu'il met finalement à la disposition de son ami Demetz pour y installer l'école des contremaîtres de la Colonie agricole et pénitentiaire de Mettray que les deux hommes fondent en juillet 1839. Il en sera le co-directeur jusqu'à sa mort en son château du Petit-Bois le 10 septembre 1852. Il a voulu reposer au cimetière de la Colonie". (Sources : Archives départementales d'Indre-et-Loire).
