Le tunnel du Simplon, livre à la circulation des trains depuis le printemps de 1906, a placé ,Milan à 14 heures de Paris et 22 heures de Londres, et Rome à 26 heures de Paris et 38 de Londres. Cette voie est donc la plus rapide entre Jes deux versants des Alpes, la distance de Paris à Milan, qui était jadis par le Mont-Cenis de 945 kilomètres, réduits à 945 par le percement du Gothard, ayant été abaissée grâce au Simplon à 826 kilomètres (distance inférieure à celle de Paris à Marseille.
