Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Revised. Large ocatvo hardcover 8" x 10" in navy blue cloth handsomely decorated and lettered in gilt and silver with image of a sailing vessel front cover. "New and Revised Edition". 200 pp. Profusely illustrated through out with line drawings and engravings. A tight example, all gilt bright, bit of rubbing to the extremities. One of nicer such volumes of the late 19th century featuring a history of yachting in America from the early days of the New York Yacht Club, established 1854, to the 1870s, then the International Period (1871-1885). With additional contributions on the Mayflower and Galetea races of 1886; American steam yachting; British yachting; and the American yachting seasons of 1886 and 1887. Interestingly, two letters from book shops are laid in---one dated 1935 from the Cheswick Book Shop in New York advising that they have a related book in stock (" Old Ship Figure-Heads and Sterns") that they note was published in 1925 at $75 and they could offer it at $25; the other, dated 1928n from Travers Book Store in Trenton, New Jersey, offering two other related books ("American Clipper Ships" and "Ship Models and How To Build Them" at $35 and $25 respectively).

Framed. 7 3/4" x 12 1/4." Color chromolithograph. Full margins. Plate 3. "Charleston, San Francisco." From "Our Navy. Its Growth and Achievements." Frederic S. Cozzens [1856-1928] is considered to be one of the best American nineteenth century marine illustrators. He is first known to have sketched marine scenes as early as 1868 and he contributed many illustrations to such publications as Harper's Weekly, Daily Graphic, and Leslie's Magazine. Known best for his depiction of yachting scenes, Cozzens drew all types of watercraft, including naval images such as this. His first publication was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races, which contained 27 chromolithographs, and his work was so well received that Cozzens produced four other series of prints: Typical American Yachts [1886]; Yachts and Yachting [1887]; Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements [1892]; and Old Naval Prints [1892]. These are nice examples from his work, Our Navy, illustrating the American Navy just before the turn of the century. Very Good with original colors.
