A rare, hard-to-find, history book on the passage of Hannibal's army of men and elephants over the Alps to attack Rome in 218 BC with citations mostly from ancient historian Polybius. Blue boards with Gilded title"Passage of Hannibal" on spine. Includes 2 maps and 2 illustrations. Tight binding and clean 1828 text. A newspaper clipping from 1979 is attached to the inside front cover. Repaired spine. Front hinge cracked at bottom. A frontise page after the title page is missing. Professional book dealer with storefront since 1975. All orders carefully packaged and promptly shipped.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Two volumes. 472pp + Index, and 444pp and Geographical Index. Leather bound, but both volumes have a detached front board and lack the back board. The fold out plan of the city is present at the end of Vol I and both volumes are internally clean, but would benefit from rebinding.

SECOND EDITION 1828. 8vo, approximately 220 x 130 mm, 8½ x 5 inches, 1 folding map and 3 engraved plates, pages: xxviii, 1-235, lacks half-title, contemporary calf, rebacked keeping the original gilt lettered labels, gilt rules to spine and double gilt rules to edges of covers. Slight darkening and slight shelf wear to edges of covers, slight shelf wear to corners, pale brown offset to most of folding map, offset from plates to facing page, all plates have a small stain to top margin, not affecting images, 4 pages have brown stains (see attached images), pale browning to pastedowns, occasional fox spot to margins, small ink name to first pastedown, a good copy. FIRST EDITION 1820. 8vo, approximately 210 x 130 mm, 8 x 5 inches, engraved folding map with hand coloured routes plus 3 engraved plates, pages: xxii, [ii], 1-40, 1-182, [2] - Errata, bound in full polished calf, gilt lettered label to spine, gilt decoration to spine. Upper hinge beginning to crack but attached firmly to the cords, a few small marks to covers and slight shelf wear to corners and edges, offset from plates to facing pages, all other pages clean, small repair to blank side of map, 2 small closed tears to margins neatly repaired, foxing and pale browning to pastedowns and free endpapers, armorial bookplate to first pastedown and identical one to first free endpaper, (John Hopton of Can-Frome in the county of Hereford).
