Third Edition, revised and enlarged, 'price one shilling (net)', small 8vo.,(in 4's), (184x120mm), pp: title page, iv,1-60, [2], incl. map & chart, 2 pages ads. at end + ads. to rear pastedown endpaper, front pocket (e.g. flap on front pastedown endpaper) repaired with sellotape, contains the map and panorama 'The Horizon of the Wrekin' on a single sheet. "The Horizon compiled by the Rev. J.M. Buff, Vicar of East Garston, Berks." The panoramic view printed in muted colours. Bound in blue paper covered boards, with lengthy title to front board lettered in red & black & ads. to rear board advertising photos & chromographs, spine with loss to the centre of 2 inches, boards lightly spotted & marked, otherwise sound, tight & very good. Worldcat & Copac locate only the Cambridge University copy. WITH Broadside. 'To All Friends Round The Wrekin offered as an accompaniment to the interesting chart of this celebrated Shropshire Mountain'. Single sheet printed on one side only, (253x205mm). In verse, printed in 2 columns of 24 lines & 22 lines. Printed initials R.C. Pitchford, Feb 14th 1833. Hulbert and Davies, Printers, Shrewsbury, very good condition. Probably R.C. was a member of the Cotes family, resident at Pitchford at that time. No copy found in Worldcat or Copac. The BL has an 1862 edition of this Guide & Cambridge University Library an 1870, new edition. Our copy is the 3rd edition, revised and enlarged of 1879. Cambridge also has a Diagram of 'The Horizon of the Wrekin' circa 1850 suggesting that it was issued separately as a single sheet. Rev. John Marten Buff is credited with 'The Genuineness of the Book of Enoch' published in 1837. His son had died in 1831 and he was also a subscribing member of the SPCK in 1812. It is therefore likely that the panorama 'The Horizon of the Wrekin' was available in 1833 (the date of the Broadside) and also appeared in the 1862, 70 and 79 editions of the Guide. Babington, Charles Cardale (1808-1895), botanist and archaeologist, was born at Ludlow on 23 Nov. 1808. His father Joseph Babington (1768-1826), at the time of Charles's birth a physician, afterwards took holy orders. He had a fondness for botany, contributed to Sir James Edward Smith's 'English Botany', and taught his son the elements of the science. Before going up to Cambridge Charles Babington came under the influence of William Wilberforce [q.v.] a friend of his father, as he afterwards came under that of Charles Simeon [q.v.]. At his death he was the oldest resident member of the university, and the oldest fellow of the Linnean Society. He had been elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1835, of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh in 1836, of the Society of Antiquaries in 1859, of the Royal Society in 1851, and fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1882.
