First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. 100pp. Octavo [19.5cm]. Bound in burgundy cloth, with gilt stamped title on spine. Deckle edges. Rubbing to extremities. Fore-edge of rear board has been bumped. Binding is strong, but textblock is threatening to crack in a few spots. Two prior owners have left a signature and date on the front free endpaper. The only book written by lawyer William Howe Crane, older brother of author Stephen Crane. Stephen's novella "The Monster" is considered to be inspired by the mob lynching of Robert Lewis, a Black citizen of Port Jervis, New York. William Howe Crane witnessed the lynching, and (as he later gave testimony) was one of the few men attempting to intervene and free Lewis from the noose. This copy was originally owned by Frank W. Noxon, who has signed the front free endpaper. Noxon was a close college friend and fraternity brother of Stephen Crane's. Scarce.
