The University of Pennsylvania awarded its first Ph.D. in Mathematics to Edwin S. Crawley in 1892 and he was appointed chairman of the Department of Mathematics in 1899. ELEMENTS OF PLANE AND SPHERICAL TRIGONOMETRY was first published by J.B. Lippincott in 1890.
