Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The author observes: "All of Greece is absorbing and rewarding. There is hardly a rock or stream without a battle or myth or miracle or a peasant anecdote or a superstition; and talk and incident, nearly all of it odd or memorable, thicken round the traveller's path at every step." In 'Mani', one… of the "two best travel books of the century", Patrick Leigh Fermor fully bears this out. His glorious fusion of scholarship, history and imagination is a joy to read. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. John Craxton (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Book Club Edition. First published by John Murray in 1977, this is a Book Club edition of 1987. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of fab bright jacket by John Craxton and spine, top corners slightly rubbed and bruised, not price clipped (no published price)…, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy, looks almost unread. 291pp. Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (1915- 2011), also known as Paddy Fermor, was a British author, scholar and soldier who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. At the age of 18, Paddy decided to walk the length of Europe, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. He set off in December 1933, shortly after Hitler had come to power in Germany, with a few clothes, several letters of introduction, the Oxford Book of English Verse and a volume of Horace's Odes. He slept in barns and shepherds' huts, but also was invited by landed gentry and aristocracy into the country houses of Central Europe. He experienced hospitality in many monasteries along the way. He finally arrived in Constantinople in January 1935. Patrick Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as 'Britain's greatest living travel writer' during his lifetime, A BBC journalist once described him as 'a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene.' During the war, working for SOE, he achieved lasting fame for his kidnapping, with Stanley Moss, of Nazi General Heinrich Kreipe on Crete. Jacket by John Craxton (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: New. First Thus. This new, seemingly unread copy is bound in illustrated card covers as issued. The contents are bright, tight, white and square. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where… the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. This is Patrick Leigh Fermor's spellbinding part-travelogue, part inspired evocation of a part of Greece's past. Joining him in the Mani, one of Europe's wildest and most isolated regions, cut off from the rest of Greece by the towering Taygettus mountain range and hemmed in by the Aegean and Ionian seas, we discover a rocky central prong of the Peleponnese at the southernmost point in Europe. Bad communications only heightening the remoteness, this Greece - south of ancient Sparta - is one that maintains perhaps a stronger relationship with the ancient past than with the present. Myth becomes history, and vice versa. Leigh Fermor's hallmark descriptive writing and capture of unexpected detail have made this book, first published in 1958, a classic. Ref A5 7.
