Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. During a period of vocational indecision and deep depression, young William James embarked on a circuitous journey, trying out natural history field work, completing medical school, and studying ancient cultures before teaching physiological psychology on his way to becoming a philosopher. A… century after his death, Young William James Thinking examines the private thoughts James detailed in his personal correspondence, archival notes, and his first publications to create a compelling portrait of his growth as both man and thinker. By going to the sources, Paul J. Croce's cultural biography challenges the conventional contrast commentators have drawn between James's youthful troubles and his mature achievements. Inverting James's reputation for inconsistency, Croce shows how he integrated his interests and his struggles into sophisticated thought. His ambivalence became the motivating core of his philosophizing, the heart of his enduring legacy.Readers can follow James in science classes and in personal "speculations," studying medicine and exploring both mainstream and sectarian practices, in museums reflecting on the fate of humanity since ancient times, in love and with heart broken, and in periodic crises of confidence that sometimes even spurred thoughts of suicide. A case study in coming of age, this book follows the famous American philosopher's vocational work and avocational interests, his education and his frustrations-young James between childhood and fame. Anecdotes placed in the contexts of his choices shed new light on the core commitments within his enormous contributions to psychology, philosophy, and religious studies. James's hard-won insights, starting with his mediation of science and religion, led to his appreciation of body and mind in relation. Ultimately, Young William James Thinking reveals how James provided a humane vision well suited to our pluralist age. Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. JIM CROCE SONG BOOK: You Don't Mess Around With Jim (1972 Blendingwell Music) This is the songbook of the music found in Jim Croce's 3rd Album. 64pp; color photos both sides of covers, 8pp b&w photos. Contains words and music to 12 Jim Croce songs, including: You Don't Mess Around With Jim…; Hard Time Losin' Man; Walkin' Back To Georgia; Time In A Bottle; and eight more. James Joseph Croce (1943-1973) was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, he released five studio albums and numerous singles. During this period, Croce took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record and perform concerts. After Croce formed a partnership with the songwriter and guitarist Maury Muehleisen in the early 1970s, his fortunes turned. Croce's breakthrough came in 1972, when his third album, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after Croce died. The follow-up album Life and Times included the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", Croce's only No. 1 hit during his lifetime. On September 20, 1973, at the height of his popularity and the day before the lead single to his fifth album, I Got a Name, was released, Croce, Muehleisen, and four others died in a plane crash. His music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. Croce's widow and early songwriting partner, Ingrid, continued to write and record after his death. Songbook displays piano plus melody lines and has guitar chords with lyrics. Book has been used showing compression creases. Interior is complete, clean, and unmarked. Glued paperback binding is starting to separate, but pages are still bound in as of this date. Page-edges have stains from drink splashes. Now stored in a plastic bag, rear cover had bound with another book leaving scars. Album released in 1972, each song has that date in its copyright. Blendingwell catalog: B3-1168. No ISBN nor LCCN. MSR = US $4.95. Thanks for looking. Paul Wilson (Photos of Jim Croce) (illustrator). No Ownership Markings.
