Published in conjunction with Spring 2012 Exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art. "While his images may include railroad crossings, trucks, trees and buildings, the real subjects of Crooks' oil paintings are the opacity of light and the transparency of shadow. Born and raised in San Diego, and currently working in Imperial Beach, Crooks' outdoor "snapshots" bring a new freshness and local appeal to the landscape genre. Working in the spirit of realism with a romantic bent, Crooks' luminous landscapes function as interpretive windows of daily life. Marking the first museum exhibition of his work, The Point of View features twenty-three paintings created over the last twenty-five years that emphasize cityscapes, nostalgic urban scenery and expansive landscapes based on photographs taken throughout the West Coast. With a nod to the landscape painters of the 1800s such as Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Church, Crooks has the ability to transform landscapes into metaphors that emphasize his perceptions of the natural world around him. Crooks also draws influence from the narratives of Edward Hopper, the color field paintings of Mark Rothko, the liberating techniques of Wolf Kahn, and the lumanism of John Frederick Kensett." -Oceanside Museum of Art. Paperback. Octavo, [8.5 by 8.5inches], 3-fold brochure, pp. 6. Fully Illustrated with colour plates, &tc. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. William Glen Crooks has gained national and international recognition for depicting a unique and ethereal light, also inherent to San Diego where the artist was born and raised. Crooks' canvases depict subjects ranging from landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes, to figurative works as well. No matter what the subject, Crooks' masterful execution of achieving this luminous glow has won him critical acclaim and recognition. Robert Pincus of the San Diego Union-Tribune observed this of Crooks' last solo exhibition at Scott White Contemporary Art: "The luminous look of his paintings isn't overtly spiritual, but it does give them a transcendental glow that would have made such 19th-century greats as poet Walt Whitman or painter Martin Johnson Heade smile approvingly." Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century's growing awareness of the challenges posed by pests like the San Jose scale, this book offers valuable insights into the identification and differentiation of Lecanium species. Through detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations, the author unveils the subtle yet crucial features that distinguish these insects. Published in conjunction with the Spring 2012 Exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. . The E. S. Lawrence Gallery of Aspen, Colorado notes: "Incorporating a seamless network of influences, garnered from his study of Art History, William Glen Crooks portrays the world around him in a strictly personal and contemporary manner. For the last fifteen years, William Glen Crooks has been a painter of the American landscape; landscapes depicted by the rural vistas and suburban structures that he witnesses on a day to day basis. These scenes are not grandly romanticized, but instead reveal an intimacy and vitality in what might otherwise be described as mundane. A hidden grandeur in the everyday subjects is uncovered through William Glen Crook's deft application of color and light. It is a manner similar to that of Edward Hoper, who dramatized local scenes of ordinary description, through his use of light and shadows. The remarkable radiance in William Glen Crook's work references renown for creating sublime abstractions through color modulation. William Glen Crooks' work finds a distinct balance in contemporary art, by synthesizing such extreme poles as minimalism and photorealism. By integrating his life's experiences, William Glen Crooks has created unique visions of a distinctly American reality". In exceptionally good condition.
