Cuando en 1978 Edward Said acuñó el concepto de orientalismo en su libro homónimo, justamente célebre, y tachó de inventores a Esquilo y Heródoto, quizá no le faltara razón, pero lo cierto es que se dejó en el tintero otros nombres griegos. El de Ctesias no… es el menor de ellos. Nacido en torno al 451-441 a.C. en Cnido, Asia Menor -territorio a la sazón perteneciente al Imperio aqueménida-, en el seno de una distinguida familia de médicos, los Asclepíadas, Ctesias de Cnido, médico a su vez de profesión, atendió personalmente al Gran Rey Artajerjes II y su familia. Este prolongado servicio le dio acceso privilegiado a mucha información, así como a numerosas y ricas tradiciones orales, sobre los territorios integrados en un imperio que abarcaba desde Chipre o Líbano hasta áreas de Afganistán, Turk-me-nis-tán y -al menos nominalmente- el propio valle del Indo. Tras regresar a la Hélade, Ctesias seguramente terminó de redactar una serie de obras que conservamos de forma fragmentaria: fundamentalmente, las Relaciones de la India (Indiká), de tipo paradoxográfico, y, sobre todo, las Historias de Persia (Persiká).
