Le château de Pont-d Ain, édifié dès 1296 durant la guerre delphino-savoyarde pour contrôler la frontière et les passages sur l…e seul pont qui existait sur l Ain au Moyen Âge est assez vite devenu un lieu de résidence très apprécié des comtes de Savoie et de leurs héritiers. Une fouille concernant le bâti a permis de retrouver l aula du château qui était sans doute une des plus vastes parmi les possessions des princes de Savoie. Elle avait comme les autres un double caractère de résidence somptueuse, de lieu d exercice et de symbole du pouvoir. Par les comptes de la châtellenie, nous sommes assez bien renseignés sur la structure, les dimensions, les espaces de ce bâtiment. La fouille préventive entreprise sur les élévations intérieures et extérieures de l aula a permis de proposer une stratigraphie complexe composée de dix horizons chronologiques se succédant du Moyen Âge à nos jours. L aula comtale constitue le coeur de l ensemble castral, c est un vaste édifice quadrangulaire mesurant 46,50 m de long sur 13,80 m de large, comptant deux niveaux, s appuyant à l ouest contre une courtine crénelée préexistante (érigée une décennie plus tôt, dès le début du xive s.). Constructions, modifications et réparations se succèdent dans l aula comme dans les autres parties du château. Au rez-de-chaussée, un cellier éclairé par quelques fenêtres étroites était surmonté par la salle de réception et la camera du prince ouverte à l est sur la plaine de l Ain par de grandes baies géminées finement sculptées. Un décor peint de motifs de rinceaux couvrait les murs de la pièce nord de l aula ; une salle haute était placée directement sous une toiture à forte pente, recouverte de bardeaux. Des circulations et édicules en bois couronnaient et flanquaient cet édifice à la fois résidentiel et militaire. À la fin du xive s., le crénelage occidental fut arasé en partie lors de la construction d un étage supplémentaire recouvert d une nouvelle charpente. Les parties basses des créneaux et merlons fossilisées dans la façade permettent cependant de proposer une reconstitution exacte de cet ancien chemin de ronde occidental. L horizon suivant, daté de la fin du xve s., signe une profonde modification des espaces intérieurs résolument tournés vers la fonction résidentielle qui engendre sans doute la suppression des galeries de bois greffées sur l édifice. Un vaste escalier Renaissance, traditionnellement attribué à Marguerite d Autriche (bien qu il soit daté de 1594 par une marche épigraphe) ponctue la façade orientale au nord et s insère dans un espace ayant contenu une loge médiévale reliant l aula à une grande tour aujourd hui disparue. Enfin, les transformations successives se sont attachées à parer le château d éléments de confort dont la plupart disparurent dans l ample reconstruction du xviiie s.
