The small South Waikato township of Tirau was originally given the name Oxford (possibly because the NZ town of Cambridge was located nearby) but the Maori name, from a prominant local peak, was substuited. This history of Tirau and district covers its earliest times in the opening three chapters --- geology, Maori history and the years before 1900. By the 1880s the first European settlers were established, beginning the process that led to the creation of some of the finest dairying land in a region noted for its agricultural production. Tirau was also an important trade and transport centre in its early days, being almost equidistant from a number of larger centres such as Rotorua, Taupo, Hamilton and Tauranga, with Thames to the north. Nearby Okoroire with its hotel and hotsprings, was a popular stop-over for tourists. This fine history covers the pivotal events of Tirau and district up to 2000 and into the early years of the new Millenium. In addition, developments such as the civic, community, education, business, transport, sporting and local government facilities are included. Recollections of early settlers, notes of long standing and prominant settlers and are there too, with a large collection of "Family stories" concluding the text section. Text material was provided by numerous contributors, with Peg Cummins compiling a thoroughly professional finished product First edition of 2006, published by the Tirau Historical Society, 312 pages, including appendices, bibliography and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photographs. maps/plans and some art.
