"What makes this basic cookbook so distinctive is that…Marion Cunningham, who is the personification of the nineteenth-century teacher, is always at your side with her forthright tips and comments, encouraging the beginning cook and inspiring the more adventurous. She knows what today's cooks are looking for, and she has a way of instilling confidence and joy in the act of cooking. In giving the book new life, Mrs. Cunningham has been careful always to preserve the best of the old. She has retained all the particularly good, tried-and-true recipes from preceding editions, retesting and rewriting when necessary. She has rediscovered lost treasures, including delicious recipes that were eliminated when practically no one baked bread at home. This is now the place to find the finest possible recipes for Pumpkin Soup, Boston Baked Beans, Carpetbag Steak, Roast Stuffed Turkey, Anadama Bread, Indian Pudding, Apple Pie, and all of the other traditional favorites." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Twelfth Edition. The landmark work by this legendary female culinary expert, originally published in 1896 under the title, "The Boston Cooking School Cook Book,'' then renamed & revised over the years. This is the Twelfth Edition from 1980, in 811 pages with illustrations throughout by… Lauren Jarrett & a Preface from master chef James Beard. Hardcover has white paper over boards decorated with food images, with title in purple lettering inside a red oval to front & spine. Condition is VG: a sold, firmly bound copy, showing scattered food spots & soil, dark foxed spots to all outside edges of text block. The front endpapers were bound in upside down. Interior pages creamy white with moderate, age-appropriate tanning, but unmarked by writing. There is a 1/2" unclosed tear descending from top edge of spine. Former owner left index cards & loose recipes on scraps of paper throughout, which we have left intact. A solid vintage copy! No DJ (missing). Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand.
