Plus 3 copper-engraved illustrations of coins, obverse and reverse. Different woodcut device to each title-page, woodcut head-and tail-pieces. HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary overlapping laced vellum, faded manuscript title in contemporary hand to spine, unobtrusive remnants of old blank ticket at foot, vellum darkened in places, small wormhole on spine and some traces inside cover; minute contemporary inscription inside cover and at foot of verso of first free endpaper, two old stamps to title-page, smudged lower corner of two leaves in the second work. In a very good condition. Fine interior, very well preserved. ~ FIRST EDITION. Gisbert Cuper (Gijsbert Kuiper; Gisbertus Cuperus) (1644-1716) was antiquary, philologist and Dutch politician. He was an avid collector; in 1710, he estimated that he had collected 100 volumes of letters, describing this as "a little treasure of paper and literature". See also the excellent biographical essay: "Digging for Antiquities with Diplomats: Gisbert Cuper (1644-1716) and his Social Capital" (Bianca Chen, Republics of Letters, May 2009). ~ [BOUND WITH:] Johannes Arntzenius: Dissertationes binae, quarum prior agit de colore et tinctura comarum, posterior de civitate romana apostoli Pauli. (Utrecht, Guilielmum Kroon, 1725). The work comprises of two dissertations. The pagination is consecutive. Fascinating very early dissertation on hair treatment, styling, dyeing and bleaching, accompanied by one on the Apostle Paul's City of Rome. Extremely rare. H-2 OUT.
