This book opens during the aftermath of a horrific train wreck where lives were brutally lost, including that of a young woman and man, who each left behind a baby. Ann Stewter, a coal farmer and her husband, Jim, took in the orphaned boy, Lowell Jr. He grows up alongside Clyde, the deformed son of the coal farmer. As the boys mature, Stowter's alcoholism and violence grow, culminating in the death of Ann, and suspicions of foul play. Clyde, who was witness to the incident, shares his fears with Lowell. Lowell and Clyde's friendship deepens as Stowter's controlling behavior escalates, nurturing the suspicions of abuse and neglect. Lowell decides to flee but overhears Stowter and others plotting against him, leading him to escape before they can act on their sinister plans. The story encapsulates the complexities of loss, hardship, and the struggle for justice. It explores the lasting impacts of trauma and the lengths people will go to seek revenge. Rich in themes of resilience, friendship, and the fight for justice, this book sheds light on the darker aspects of human nature while preserving faith in the bonds that unite us. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. Octavo, 248 pages, red cloth; dj nicked. NOTE: this is an early, rare example of a wrap-around pictorial dj. The dj art is by Morris Davidson, who had 80 one-man shows in NYC, and was a founder of the American Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors. This dust jacket art is one of the earliest in his career. "The Mahoning River is one of the beauty spots of the old Keystone State. When Autumn comes the . foliage . with the sunshine upon the silvery waters of the river all combine to attract the thought, mind and eye of the traveler. . Such is the scene in the valley in which my story opens, where the hero learned to use the revolver and wrestle with men." - Introduction. This novel was made into a 6-reel silent movie, "Glory of Youth", later re-named " The Prince in Pledge ". One of the exciting highlights of the film was a head-on train wreck. NOTE: contrary to someone else's description, the Waif is a boy, not a girl, and the wreck is a train wreck in western Pennsylvania, and not a shipwreck on the Atlantic coast. FYI.
