This book follows the author's journey as one of the first German explorers to venture into the Kamerun Grassfields, a region named after its rolling hills and abundant plant life. Arriving in 1889, the author found himself enveloped by a world vastly different from his own, where the indigenous people lived in harmony with their stunning natural surroundings. The author was particularly fascinated by the cultural practices of the Duala people and vividly captures their traditions, beliefs, and way of life. He describes their intricate social structures, their artistic talents, and their complex system of trade and exchange. Through the author's eyes, we learn about the challenges and triumphs of exploring this uncharted territory. We witness the hardships of navigating the dense equatorial forests, the thrill of encounters with exotic wildlife, and the difficulties of negotiating with local chiefs and rulers. This book is not just a historical account of an intrepid explorer's journey; it is also a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit. Through the author's vivid descriptions, we gain a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the African continent and its people. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Originally published in 1893, "À travers le Cameroun du sud au nord" is a seminal travel account by German officer Curt von Morgen that documents his 1889-1891 expedition from the Atlantic coast into the Cameroonian hinterland. The narrative is highly valued by historians for its detailed ethnographic and botanical descriptions, providing a rare look at pre-colonial societies such as the Beti and the Islamic principalities of the Adamaoua region. As the first European to cross the country's interior from Douala to the north, von Morgen recorded vital observations on local social structures and geography before major colonial shifts took hold. Modern editions, translated and annotated by anthropologist Philippe Laburthe-Tolra, contextualize the work as both an essential historical source and a reflection of the late-19th-century colonial mindset. French language, includes fold out map, 2 volumes.

Condition: Sehr gut.
