BOARDS ALMOST DETACHED-Page edges are BLACKENED, blackening/darkening to 60% of front board, 60% of rear & 80% of spine which was lightly faded anyway, title to spine still legible. Smoke darkening to end-papers which were browned anyway. Inner front hinge is split open & hanging in 2 threads, inner rear hinge split & holding on threads. 2cm square scuff to top rear board, small scuff to edges, small white blotches to top front. Some wear to corners, wear to spine-ends which are starting to fray. Light yellowing to margins of text which is otherwise clean. Attractive b/w illustrations & b/w photos of the period. Letter measures 4 1/2" x 7." One page. Letter reads: "Mar. 25, 1873. Dear Sir, With great pleasure--and I am truly Yours, George William Curtis." "Mr. Lavely" also written at the lower-left corner, the possible addressee. George William Curtis (1824-1892) was an American writer and public speaker. He contributed many articles to Harper's Magazine and became the editor in the 1860s. Curtis wrote the humorous novels, Prue and I (1856) and Trumps (1862). Other writings include Washington Irving: A Sketch (1891) and Essays from the Easy Chair (1893) which is a collection of essays Curtis wrote under Harper's Magazine for "The Easy Chair" column. Curtis was also an abolitionist, education and civil service reformer, and an acquaintance of many literary and political greats such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ulysses S. No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Dated April 8, 1899. Letter is typed on 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" stationery of the Washington Office of The Chicago Record. William E. Curtis (1850-1911) was an American author and journalist working for The Chicago Record. In this letter to Mr. E. Turney of Fairfield, Iowa, Curtis gives a description and his perspective on how the Filipino rebel, Emilo Aguinaldo (1869-1964), after first being aided by the United States to fight the Spanish in the Spanish-American War (1898), later turned and fought against the Americans in the Philippine-American War (1899-1901). Bindings are solid and tight but volume 1 caught some water at some point. Front board has staining inner endpapers are fine and unmarked. Rear end paper shows some watermarks at the bottom and on the bottom of last six pages. Both volumes have some spine fading otherwise volume 2 is quite good. Gilt tops and rest of pages uncut.
