Gavantius (1569-1638), liturgist and member of the Barnabite order, was general of his order and named perpetual consultor to the Congregation of Rites by Pope Urban VIII. Early on he dedicated himself to the study of liturgy, and this was his chief work. It traces the historical origin of the rites, discusses their mystical significance, and gives rules for their observance and obligation of the rubrics. Cardinals Millino, Muto, and Cajetan approved it, and it was dedicated to Urban VIII. Cuvernon was a doctor of the Sorbonne Citations: Gavanti: BL 17th Italian 382. Camerini, Giunta, Venice 1316.
