Unusually clean & bright copy of this seminal tome in religious studies by the celebrated Baptist clergyman Thomas Armitage (1819-1896), illustrated with 174 steel engravings throughout the 978 pages, with Index in rear. Orig. copyrighted in 1986, this is a 1987 printing of that FIRST EDITION. Huge hardcover (7.5" x 11.5") has light brown cloth-covered boards, elaborately decorated & ruled in black & gilt, with gilt lettering to front & spine. Condition is a conservative VG+: exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with mild tanning, a bit heavier to edges, but completely unmarked save for 2 small stamps of former owner in front matter. Mild-modest rubbing to extremities, heavier at corners & spine tips, with slight loss to heel of spine. All tissue guards intact, though the one protecting the frontispiece is chipped at inner bottom. A stunning copy!
