Bound in full brown leather with two light brown labels to spine bearing gilt titling. Spine has gilt fillets, moderate wear to leather throughout, a chip to head, and light splitting to top of rear joint…. Boards have significant wear to edges exposing the boards in some areas, heavy bumping to lower fore corners, an area of heavy peeling to the leather around the fore edge of the rear board, and rubbing throughout. Text block has decorative speckling and moderate age-toning to edges, age-toning and foxing to endpapers, creases to corners of a few leaves, slight mis-trimming to bottom edges of the first two leaves of "The Surgeon's Practical Guide in Dressing", a spot of material transference from one leaf to another on the edge of the last page (likely due to an area of adhesive being pulled apart), light foxing throughout, and light penciling throughout. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. Part of the "Select Medical Library" series by a publisher in Philadelphia, this book is an example of a trend in the 1830s and -40s where American publishers frequently printed European medical texts in monthly installments and then offered them bound together into annual volumes for doctors and medical students. Before international copyright laws and fast transatlantic shipping were established, these American reprints helped local physicians stay up-to-date at an affordable cost. 1415471. CONTAINING DISEASES OF THE ENCEPHALON, WITH EXTRACTS FROM OLLIVIER'S WORK ON DISEASES OF THE SPINAL CORD AND ITS MEMBANES.…Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1838. Bound with AN ESSAY ON DEW, AND SEVERAL APPEARANCES CONNECTED WITH IT. BY WILLIAM CHARLES WELLS, M.D. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1838. Paged as 1-299, [1], 1-71. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 14cm. Original quarter leather binding; spine leather dried and darkened with chips at ends and at upper front joint; two worn black labels present but without discernable lettering; marbled paper boards; front board lacking surface leather at its fore-edge corners but with leather still present at rear board corners; some toning and staining to boards as well. Mild bowing to book. Bound without pastedowns with marbled paper just overlapping at the edges and full cardstock exposed. Personal library bookplate of S.F. Hill (Civil War-era Carrollton, Alabama surgeon Dr. Samuel F. Hill) dated for 1860 on front board's verso. Slender horizontal swath of paper removed from front free endpaper; pages 7-8 slightly pulled; moisture staining to early leaves; foxing throughout. Binding is still firm. A Hill family history asserts that Dr. Samuel Felto Hill (1813-1895) was a Confederate Army surgeon but cursory research disproves that claim. It is possible that Hill temporarily participated with a militia unit but the most plausible scenario is that he simply treated ill and injured soldiers as Carrollton was in proximity to Alabama civil war activity in Tuscaloosa and Greensboro as well as being reasonably close to the hospital town of Columbus, Mississippi where thousands of Union and Confederate wounded were transported after the Battle of Shiloh.
