The Benko Counter-Gambit represents the most important and dynamic contribution to opening theory for a quarter of century. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. x+164 pages with diagrams and indices. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First American edition. The Accelerated Dragon (or Accelerated Fianchetto) is a chess opening variation of the Sicilian Defense that begins with the moves: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6. The Accelerated Dragon features an early .g6 by Black. An important difference between this line and the Dragon is that Black avoids playing .d7 d6, so that they can later play .d7 d5 in one move, if possible. Black also avoids the Yugoslav Attack, but since White has not been forced to play Nc3 yet, 5.c4 (the Maróczy Bind) is possible. The Accelerated Dragon generally features a more positional style of play than many other variations of the Sicilian. Condition: Corners gently bumped, previous owner's name to front end paper else very good.

The Goring Attack is a chess opening characterised by the moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3 Bc5 6. 0-0 d6 7. d4 exd4 8. cxd4 Bb6 9. Nc3 Na5 10. Bg5 The Goring Attack is a variation of the Evans Gambit (4.b4). After the Evans Gambit is accepted (4.Bxb4) and the riposte (5.c3) has prompted the defensive 5.Bc5 (the second most popular retreat), play continues until 10.Bg5, the defining move of the Goring Attack. It is named after Carl Theodor Goring, who played it in several games against Johannes Minckwitz in 1869. The Goring Attack came into fashion after Mikhail Chigorin played it against Wilhelm Steinitz in 1883. We are told Tchigorin scored his most brilliant successes with this variation. Modern Chess Openings describes it as a "tricky" opening, "which can be refuted only if you know the right moves". Condition: Edge wear with bumped corners and age toning to pages else very good.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 52 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial stapled wrappers. Issue 140 of Chess Player series. First edition. Except the Siesta Variation is anything but boring. It is extremely tactical and wild enough to feature a few piece sacrifices. The opening moves are: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 (Ruy Lopez) a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.c3 f5. Black's 5th move challenges the normal, but still fully under tension, slow pace of many Ruy Lopezes. In fact, it blows up the kingside and center. White can certainly try to sidestep the main lines of the variation, but he doesn't get too much, and Black can easily take over the initiative. (Gambit Chess Player) Condition: Edge wear with bumped corners, edges sunned, some soiling else good.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First American edition. The Sicilian Defense is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1. e4 c5. The Sicilian is the most popular and best-scoring response to White's first move 1.e4. "Indeed, most statistical surveys suggest that 1.d4 is the most successful first move for White, but only because 1.c5 scores so highly against 1.e4." New in Chess stated in its 2000 Yearbook that of the games in its database, White scored 56.1% in 296,200 games beginning 1.d4, but a full two percent lower (54.1%) in 349,855 games beginning 1.e4. "The main culprit responsible for this state of affairs" was the Sicilian, which held White to a paltry 52.3% score in 145,996 games. One sixth (17%) of all games between grandmasters, and one quarter (25%) of the games in the Chess Informant database, begin with the Sicilian.
