Original Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. There is some fading to the spine, rubbing to the corners of the boards and a little surface wear but the boards are otherwise unmarked. Browning to the page edges with a little dark marking to the bottom corners. The front free endpaper has the name of the original owner and his first College - this was Jimmy Altham, a Life Fellow of Gonville & Caius College, and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. There is a crease across the bottom corners of the pages at the back of the book but the pages are otherwise unmarked. No jacket. First printing. Heavy item so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.

He was known for his thorough and dispassionate examinations of arguments in such works as The Mind and Its Place in Nature, published in 1925, Scientific Thought, published in 1930, and Examination of McTaggart's Philosophy, published in 1933. Broad's essay on Determinism, Indeterminism, and Libertarianism in Ethics and the History of Philosophy in 1952 introduced the philosophical terms occurrent causation and non-occurrent causation , which became the basis for today's agent causal and event causal distinctions in the debates on Libertarian Free Will. Paul Arthur Schilpp February 6, 1897 - September 5, 1993 was an American educator. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States prior to World War I. Schilpp taught at Northwestern University, University of the Pacific and spent the last years of his professional career teaching undergraduate philosophy courses at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. A serious and driven teacher of moral decision and thought, often controversial, Schilpp came to Southern Illinois University after he was considered too old to teach at respectable universities . Southern Illinois University agreed with his condition that he be allowed to instruct undergraduate general studies courses in philosophy thus allowing him to reach the greatest number of what Schilpp called maleable minds . He was known for his passionate teaching methods and highly energetic delivery. Schilpp was for many years the editor of the Library of Living Philosophers. As editor he was able to convince such notable personalities as Albert Einstein to contribute to the library. Schilpp died of respiratory failure at the age of 96 in St. Louis, MO. Book.
