Soft cover. Condition: New. By: D.W. Ensign & Co., Pub. 1879, reprinted 2023, 450 pages, Index, 8" x 11" soft cover, ISBN #0-89308-353-4. Columbiana County was created in 1803 from Jefferson County. It was settled early on by Quakers and Scotch-Irish from Pennsylvania but was later settled primary by Germans. The county itself sits in the eastern side of the state bordering Pennsylvania with the Ohio River on its southern boundary. The first chapters of this book are devoted to the general history of the County and are introduced by such an account of French and Spanish discoveries as was deemed of value in connection with that history. Other general chapters treat Indian Occupation, Land Titles, Geology, Organizations, Education, Politics, County's Military history, and a roster of the early Militia and soldiers who served in the Civil War. The author has also given histories of the various townships along with biographies of their residents. Some surnames of these biographies: Armstrong, Arter, Aten, Bell, Carr, Cook, Davis, Dickinson, Dobson, Dysart, Entriken, Farmer, Heacock, Hill, Hime, Holloway, Johnson, Johnston, Keeler, Kerr, Long, Martin, McClellan, Murray, Oyster, Pike, Robinson, Stanton, Strawn, Thompson, Walter, and Whinnery. The author carefully weaves together details from original documents, historical records, and firsthand accounts from the earliest residents of the area. The book begins with the first French explorers, missionaries, and fur traders who ventured into the region, tracing their paths through the wilderness and their encounters with various Native American tribes. The story then focuses on the pivotal role of the St. Joseph River, a crucial waterway for the French in their efforts to establish trade routes and settlements. We learn about the voyages of explorers like LaSalle and Marquette, their struggles to navigate treacherous waters, and their interactions with the local Indigenous peoples. The book offers a unique perspective on the complex relationship between the French and the Native Americans, highlighting the interplay of exploration, trade, and missionary work. The book explores the intricate history of the area, from the early French claims to the eventual establishment of counties and settlements. It paints a vivid picture of life in the 17th century, showcasing the challenges and triumphs faced by the early explorers and the fascinating cultural encounters that occurred. The book's insights into the St. Joseph River and its role in early American exploration make it a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of the Great Lakes region and the westward expansion of European influence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
