Kalyna pursued economic and political goals throughout the 1930's. To this end the new cooperative tried to provide consumers with goods and services at cost, afforded local craftsmen an opportunity to sell their wares, and tried to train a cadre of Ukrainian-Canadian cooperators who would be able to establish a Ukrainian cooperative movement all across Canada. At the same time, Kalyna was first and foremost a coopertive booktsore, and as such it had a specifically political task: to distribute and popularize books and periodicals which reflected the 'new' thinking characteristic of interwar Ukrainian integral nationalism."
