The original dark-green silk cloth shows touches of rubbing at the ext…remities, but the binding is strong and the gilt lettering bright on the spine, including the words, "Who am I?" An Enigma. The interior is mildly age-toned throughout, but completely clean, with a tear in the margin of page 79---obviously from publishing. There is a small Weiser bookseller label on the front pastedown. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] After two accidents, blind and partially paralyzed, Mollie Fancher displayed signs of supposed clairvoyance and split personality and became famous for her ability to abstain from eating for long periods of time. From the Introduction: "I have known Miss Fancher personally for twelve years, and have witnessed some of the strange things here recorded. I have been exceedingly careful to obtain the testimony of the most reliable persons. § Why we think, and how we think, involves mysterious operations of our minds imperfectly understood in any respect. Who has been able to tell us what the soul is, where it is, and how it maintains its relations to the body? § Who has been able to tell us what is the mind, and what is its relation to the soul? § The story of the life of Mollie Fancher cannot fail to cause speculations and strange thoughts in the minds of all thinking persons upon these and kindred subjects." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. Bound in maroon publisher's cloth. Spine is lightly faded; some minor spots of rubbing and bumping. A name with a date (1895) is printed on the front free fly leaf. In…terior pages are clean. Mollie Fancher (d.1916) was a Brooklyn woman who suffered two accidents at the age of 17 and as a result became bind and partially paralyzed. Afterwards she displayed signs of supposed clairvoyance and split personality. She was also able to exist for long periods with little or no food. Witnesses testified to her being able to read books and letters clairvoyantly as well as identify lost objects. Over time Fancher became "possessed" or plagued by several different personalities with names such as Sunbeam, Idol and Rosebud (Shepard, Encyc. of Occultism I, p.323-24). [Crabtree 1361; Besterman, p. 99].
