In Anlehnung an Jim Cummins und seine Unterscheidung zwischen basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS) und cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) sowie darauf aufbauende Modelle beschäftigt sich die Arbeit insbesondere mit den schulisch-akademischen Fähigkeiten in beiden Sprachen. Des weiteren werden Analysen zur Sprachwahl vor und nach der Rückkehr, zum Wortschatzreichtum und zu einem möglichen Sprachverlust des Deutschen (language attrition) nach der Rückkehr in die Türkei in die Untersuchung einbezogen.
