Compton Leith's celebrated philosophical and psychological essay on the myth of the Sirens, titled "Sirenica." Written by noted British art historian and British Museum curator Ormonde Maddock Dalton under the pseudonym he used for his personal creative writing; for his professional writing he used O. M. Dalton. London/New York: John Lane, The Bodely Head, 1916. Original publisher's half-vellum over swirled marbled paper boards, gilt spine lettering, top edge gilt, rough cut page edges, pp. 178 plus ads (4pp.), size about 7.5x5 inches. This work explores the pursuit of unattainable ideals. Condition is Very Good. Binding remains secure, corners sharp, vellum is toned, some chips to marbled paper edges. Endpapers has mild age toning, pages even lighter; no marks or writing, no loose pages or tears. A nice copy! Ormonde Maddock Dalton (1866-1945), was a prominent British museum curator, archaeologist, and art historian who served as the Keeper of the British and Medieval Antiquities Department at the British Museum from 1921 to 1928. He was a leading authority on early Christian, Byzantine, and medieval art. "Sirenica" is considered to be Dalton's most philosophically profound work. [A1].…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a guide to early Christian and Byzantine antiquities in the British Museum. It covers a fascinating array of objects, from engraved gems and gilded glasses to cast ivory carvings and gold rings â" all of which offer insights into the beliefs and practices of early Christians. These antiquities reveal the geographical spread of Christianity from the second century, with examples from Egypt, Syria, Italy, Britain, and North Africa. The book explores the symbolism of the period, such as the use of the fish to represent Christ and the anchor to symbolize hope. It also examines the development of Christian art, from its indirect and symbolic nature to the more realistic depictions that emerged after the conversion of Constantine. The author traces the influence of pagan mythology and Eastern religious ideas on Christian art and symbolism, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the diverse influences that shaped early Christian thought and expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
