At one time employed as a privateer - a legitimising term for "pirate" - by the English Crown, Dampier is an instrumental figure in the story of the discovery and exploration of Australia and the Pacific. This printing reproduces his log and journal, highlighting his exploration of the Dutch East Indies, the islands of Melanesia and the northern coastline of Australia. It is superbly readable, and edited by Gerald Norriss, who also introduces the book.Usual high standard of Folio books; this means elegant typography, relevant illustrations, a sewn binding and acid proof paper. Might be unread, and in a superb slipcase.
