Born in slavery in Mississippi, Bond would eventually establish the largest business in Madison, Arkansas, in reality an amalgam of businesses, including dry goods, insurance, construction, agricultural services (e.g., a cotton gin), real estate, etc., designed to serve the needs of the large African American population in the area.
